Most previews rank teams. The more useful exercise is reading the structure, because the format decides how much upset risk exists.
Format first
Single elimination maximises variance. One bad series and a favourite is out, which is why single-elim majors produce the most memorable upsets and the least reliable rankings.
Double elimination gives a favourite a second life and generally converges on the better team. A team that drops to the lower bracket early and runs it back is usually the strongest team in the event.
Group stage into playoffs rewards consistency and lets a team hide a weak map in a series it can afford.
The patch date
Check when the tournament patch was locked relative to the last patch. A meta that has been stable for eight weeks favours the teams with the deepest preparation. A patch landing days before the event favours teams that adapt fast, which is usually the younger rosters.
This single factor overturns more brackets than form does.
Seeding artefacts
Regional qualifier structures often mean the second-best team in a strong region is seeded below the best team in a weak one. Look for the group that has two genuine contenders in it — that is where the tournament’s best series happens, in the round nobody is watching.
The practical read
Format plus patch age plus group imbalance. Those three predict the shape of an event better than any power ranking.
